AZ Red Hats Updates
A lot has been happening in the red hat world and I’m hear to say, we certainly know how to have fun! It just amazes me that there are actually people out there that have not heard about us! Well, perhaps one or two but for the most part, the world knows we are a force to be reckoned with! Isn’t it wonderful to be a part of such a wonderful organization and just about anywhere you travel and if you have your “colors” on, someone will step up to you and say, “hey, I belong to a chapter in Minnesota” and where are you from? We are not bashful anymore and I think that is great! I remember the first few months after I started AZ’s first chapter, I would get up on Saturday morning to run my errands and think, “should I or shouldn’t I, wear my colors?” Then it didn’t take long for me to convince myself and say, “hey, what the heck, I’m proud of who I am!” Yes, I did get an awful lot of double takes and stares but everyone had a smile on their face and if they were brave enough to ask, who I was, I’d more than happily give them the history of the RHS! April 1, 2006 – First Annual Red Hat Derby Day! There were three hat contest winners and you just have to see the photos to believe how creative these ladies are. Click on the link below and go to Photo Album and click on Derby Day photos! Promenade Travel did a fabulous job of bringing in two busloads of ladies raring to have fun! We definitely will do this again next year so what for the announcement for the date in a few months but it’ll be around the end of March. www.azredhats.com Happy Birthday, Red Hat Society – April 25, 2006 The Queen LuLu and her Scarlet Harlots of Chandler headed south to Bisbee for a road trip and stayed at the Schoolhouse Inn B&B and then changed into Saloon Girl Regalia and took over the town and I’m certain Bisbee, AZ will never be quite the same! CRUISES – 2006 & 2007 2007 AZ State Convention- Date to be announced later this week!
It is time for many of you to return to your “summer” homes and I wish you all a safe journey and a safe return to AZ! I do not have the date for next year’s AZ state convention but it will NOT be in January or early February but will let you know the minute I have a signed contract so you can begin making your plans. I will be doing the reservations differently and it will be VERY important for that your reservations be sent in one envelope in order to be seated together. You know the old saying, “the hurrieder I go, the behinder I get”….it’s true, isn’t it?!!! I sometimes meet myself coming and going! I just want to give you a couple of quick notes to share with your red hat friends. I made a mistake – Tessa’s Tea has a different phone number and it is 602-234-3422. They will remain open for a while longer on Central just south of Camelback but do give them a call. I’ve had a couple of Sunday afternoon teas there and I am able to reserve the entire tearoom and then we shop next door at the antique shop. What fun! Other great tearooms to enjoy are listed on AZ’s web page under Shopping & Dining so visit www.azredhats.com or click on following link: http://www.azredhats.com/shopdine.htm Oh, I almost forgot, one more great tearoom and right next door to it is a fabulous shop with bunches of pretties for inside and outside your home – I just love the shop but forgot its name but when and if you go to the tearoom, you can’t miss it! The English Rose Tearoom, 201 Easy Street, #103, Carefree, AZ. (480) 488-4812 Orpheum – Silent Sundays My chapter just did something for the first time recently and it was fun and inexpensive for our ladies. Have you heard of Silent Sunday at the Orpheum? They show old silent movies and a beautiful organ plays throughout the show. You can also request your group have a tour prior to the show and learn the history of the Orpheum. It is some you must plan ahead for your group. Call 602-257-4300 and get your tickets for next fall. The “Silent Sundays” will run from September through March and the matinees start at 2 PM and is a nice outing for your ladies. The Theatre is located at 203 West Adams which is on the corner of 2nd Ave and Adams. Adams is in the downtown Phoenix area between Van Buren and Washington and runs east/west. If you come onto Adams going west, there is a loading/unloading area where cars can drop off people. The parking meters in downtown Phoenix are free on Sunday so you can park without feeding them! Red Hat Reminders Driving Divas – Whenever we are driving together to have fun, it is always nice to offer the driver some money to help offset the gas. As we all know, the price of gas keeps rising and most cars don’t get really great gas mileage. If you are lucky enough to get 20 miles to the gallon and your round-trip to fun is 60 miles, at a minimum, the driver is paying $7.50 and that doesn’t include insurance, wear and tear on their car, etc. I think it is always nice to drop some singles into the driver’s purse to say “thanks for driving!” Theatre Hats – More and more of the ladies are coming up with great ideas for new, see-through or barely there hats so they don’t need to remove them at the theatre thus, eliminating that dreadful “hat hair!” But if you do still love wearing your magnificent chapeaux, please be kind enough to inform those seated behind you that you promise to remove your hat just as soon as the lights dim --- it’s just the red hat thing to do! Restaurant Tips – If someone in your group is planning a lunch or dinner outing, don’t forget to ask if the restaurant will offer separate checks. By doing this, the restaurant is put on notice they may need a little more time to prepare your bill. If they will not offer separate checks, please remember to remind your ladies ahead of time so they will bring singles or smaller bills in order to properly pay their check and not to forget to include the tip. Sharing of Information – Many may not share my view but I feel it is very important to share ideas, places to visit, dine and shop, places to travel – basically everything the red hatters love to do. I know some QM’s do not forward information or invitations to their members if they don’t want to participate it the event themselves. Personally, I feel it is a choice of the chapter member whether she wants to participate or not and would hope that it would be her decision. I know I cannot possible go to all my own chapter events but I certainly wouldn’t want any of my ladies to miss out on the opportunity to gather with friends and have fun. As we all know, life is way to short, our lives are stressed enough, so why not give women more opportunities to laugh and come together in fun and friendship. I respect the QM’s if they don’t wish to share this information. I felt the need to let you know that many women have come or emailed me that they did not know about all the events happening throughout the state because their QM did not let them know. I truly hope you will reconsider sharing any upcoming opportunities for “Adventures in Fun.” Saturday, April 1, 2006 – Derby Day There are 12 seats available as Turf Paradise opened up a couple more tables...yippeee....so if anyone still wants to go (we already have 400 registered....they can contact Promenade at 623-977-8800. First and foremost I wish to thank all the volunteers as well as those who sent me Thank You notes regarding Arizona’s Fun, Friendship and Frolic on the Fifth, AZ’s 5th state convention of the Sisterhood of Purple! Two thousand red hatters from AZ and neighboring states enjoyed the beauty and serenity of the JW Marriott at Desert Ridge in Phoenix on Saturday, January 28, 2006. As you know, it is not an easy task to please so many women but by the sheer number of responses that I received, I know we succeeded in making lasting memories for so many of you to replay for years to come. As I looked out across the audience while Dr. Maxine was on stage, I witnessed how she touched every single woman with her humor. I know for a fact that my own chapter followed her suggestion and decorated their pooches when many took a Middle Eastern Belly Dancing Class! Ha! Ha! I am in the processing of updating the state’s website at www.azredhats.com and photos of 2006 and 2005 should be posted by April 15! As many of you know, I have a passion for red hatting and so enjoy seeing the ladies have fun. Laughing and forgetting about our life stresses for a couple or more hours a month, certainly does one’s heart good and many of you have said how this organization has changed your lives and how grateful you are. Friends are like flowers in the garden of life. Sometimes it is necessary to cultivate the relationship a little before you really get to know someone and then find out how special they are. I am so blessed to have met so many wonderful, wonderful ladies. I hope you all feel the same. We all enjoy seeing everyone get dressed in their regalia and stepping out into the public’s eye and drawing attention to ourselves. As I’ve told my kids, “now that I’m over 50 and wear a red hat, I don’t have to be accountable for my actions!” They laugh and roll their eyes but I must remember that wherever I am and whatever I’m doing, I am representing ALL my red-hatted sisters and I should set a good example. When theatres and restaurants see us arrive, I hope they will welcome us with open arms because of the joy and laughter we bring and not say, “oh, no, there is that rowdy bunch, wish they’d just leave!” We do not want to set a bad example for our Sisterhood of Purple and I do hope you will agree that we must be “model” red hatters and leave lasting good impressions in the public’s eye. Tucson’s B-Day Bash – Feb 18, 2006 A day of fun was had by many who attended the 2nd Tucson Birthday Bash, hosted by Lenny Pasch. Over a dozen vendors sold red and purple items from hats to calendars to our red-hatted sisters. Al Raitano entertained and wooed the ladies and many could not contain themselves and began dancing! Al was the recent winner of the NBC talent show, “Second Change,” where he competed with over 1,300 other performers from across the country winning with his upbeat version of “You Can Leave Your Hat On.” He also performed on television and in films as an actor. Some of his credits include “Hack,” and “Whiplash” with Ernest Borgnine. Musical accompaniment was provided by the Steve Gold Trio. AJ Lost Dutchman’s Parade – Feb 25, 2006 Thank you, Helen Johnson, for inviting me to ride in Apache Junction’s Lost Dutchman’s Parade on the back of a Harley!! Her husband, Mike, was my chauffer and since he was so thrilled to be hauling the “Queen Mum” around, I had to Knight him, Lord Michael! Thank you, Sir Michael! It was a dream come true and I loved every minute of it! I saw many red hatters in the audience as well as a couple of floats before and after my special carriage! Read all details below.
Wednesday, April 26th, 2006 1 p.m. This brilliant play has assumed the status of a modern classic. Groundbreaking at the time of its premiere THE WOMEN is a story of sexual politics, with some of the wittiest – and most cutting – dialogue ever written for the American stage. Mrs. Haimes has enjoyed a “picture perfect” marriage. When trouble arises, she receives plenty of advice, from all sides – but finally must find her own way to make her stand. Luce gives us a behind-the scenes look at pampered, preening Manhattan socialites, a malicious pack of leisure-class urban guerrillas who spend their days having their nails done and their nights dreaming of sinking them into one another's flesh. Delightful, catty fun – and a play that has figured proudly in PT’s 85-year history. “These ferocious felines of THE WOMEN make the Sex and the City girls and The Desperate Housewives look like pussycats” $20 Show Only Mesa Encore Theatre – Mesa Arts Center For the current season we can offer the Red Hats a senior group rate (for 10 or more) of $14/ticket which is $1 off the senior rate, $3 off the regular ticket price. We would like to offer a special Red Hat day at the Mesa Encore Theatre if the ladies would like one. We could have a meet & greet talk by our artistic director and perhaps a tour back stage if that's of interest. If there is any way we can help make their outing special, please don't hesitate to let me know. I'd be happy to help coordinate this for them. We just implemented a new price break for our next play 'The Desk Set.' The category called 'Friends' is good for parties of 4 or more and offers tickets at $12.50 each. Tickets can be purchased as usual through the Mesa Arts Center Box Office www.mesaartscenter.com or by phone (480) 644-6500. We hope to see you & the other Red Hatters there.
