RICHARD BAIRD RETURNS TO SEASON OPENER AS PETRUCHIO IN THE TAMING OF THE SHREW

SOUTHWEST SHAKESPEARE COMPANY announces its exciting 2007-2008 Season of professional classical theatre at the Mesa Arts Center and the return of Cyrano de Bergerac’s RICHARD BAIRD as Petruchio in The Taming of the Shrew, the first show of the “Unlikely Couples” season that gets underway September 27, 2007. SSC is offering a five-show season ticket with a three-show flex pass, and a super discounted Bargain Balcony Season Ticket of the Piper Repertory Theater shows also available. Sparks fly as one of the most unlikely romantic couples in all of literature, Kate and Petruchio, meet and proceed toward marriage. The play formed the basis for the musical Kiss Me Kate and is a rollicking romantic comedy from beginning to end. This tale of two misfits who find each other has pleased audiences throughout the centuries as it reveals universal truths about the battle of the sexes. Starring Richard Baird.

Exploring themes of overzealous ambition, betrayal, madness, and justice, ‘The Scottish Play’ follows the bloody rise and fall of one of the most tragic couples in the Shakespeare canon.

The Merry Wives of Windsor by William Shakespeare

Sir John Falstaff, a visitor to the town of Windsor and needing money, sends letters to Mistresses Page and Ford in the hope of wooing them and tapping into their husbands’ fortunes. The women discover his intention and, enlisting Mistress Quickly as their messenger, set a trap. This is one of the merriest of Shakespeare comedies and a true farce that is not to be missed.

Pygmalion by George Bernard Shaw

Based on the Myth of Pygmalion, a sculptor who fell in love with an ivory statue of his own making, Professor Henry Higgins - professor of phonetics and linguistics - makes a bet with Colonel George Pickering that he can turn Eliza Doolittle, a Cockney 'guttersnipe' flower girl from Covent Garden, into a society lady within six months. But what starts out as a bet turns into much more, when the stakes change from English society to matters of the heart. The play was also the basis for the Broadway musical My Fair Lady.
